Memories... 2014 ... Ice Bucket Challenge

Way back when, my nephew challenged me to participate in this charity event. "The Ice Bucket Challenge" Ill let AI tell you more about it. AI is good for this stuff.
Check it out!!!

Yours truly actually pouring ice water over my head. Shocking!!!!

The 2014 Ice Bucket Challenge was a massive social media campaign that went viral, raising both awareness and millions of dollars for research into Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Here's a breakdown:
What it was
  • The challenge involved participants recording themselves having a bucket of ice water poured over their heads.
  • After completing the challenge, individuals would nominate others to do the same, typically within a 24-hour window.
  • The goal was to raise awareness about ALS and encourage participants to either make a donation to ALS research or perform the challenge (many chose to do both).
How it started and spread
  • The challenge gained initial traction through individuals like Chris Kennedy and Jeanette Senerchia, and then significantly picked up momentum with the involvement of ALS patients Pat Quinn and Pete Frates.
  • Social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram became the primary vehicle for the challenge's widespread adoption.
  • The combination of personal nominations, the short response window, and the option to donate or perform the challenge created a powerful viral mechanism that propelled its rapid global spread.
Impact
  • Fundraising: The Ice Bucket Challenge raised over $220 million globally, with $115 million going to the ALS Association within six weeks, significantly boosting typical annual fundraising.
  • Awareness: The challenge increased public understanding of ALS, a previously lesser-known disease.
  • Research: Funds supported ALS research, contributing to discoveries like the NEK1 gene.
  • Long-term impact: It fostered ongoing ALS advocacy, supporting related legislation, policies, and scientific collaboration.
  • Influences: The Ice Bucket Challenge inspired other social media campaigns for various causes.
Criticisms There is ALWAYS someone who finds something wrong no matter what.
  • Some criticisms included the challenge being seen as self-congratulatory and prioritizing entertainment over donations.
  • Concerns were also raised about potential injuries and water waste, particularly in areas experiencing drought.
The Ice Bucket Challenge stands as a notable example of how social media can amplify a simple idea into a global movement for awareness and fundraising.
